York is a great place to stay for a few nights as there is lots of history, culture and attractions for you to explore. York is well known for its connections with Roman Britain around 2000 years ago, in fact for a two year period the whole Roman Empire was governed from York by Septimius Severus. Then in 886 then next people to capture the city were the Vikings, further enhancing this city's rich cultural history.
The majority of the tourism in York is confined to within the city walls, with a few of the larger attractions situated just outside the walls. This makes it a fabulous place to come without needing your car. The whole city centre is pedestrian friendly and there is some excellent bus and rail networks going to and from the city centre. Much of the accommodation in York, especially the B&B's, is set in large converted houses, giving a home from home feeling. A healthy breakfast option or the traditional full English is offered by almost all B&B's setting you up nicely for a day exploring York.
The attractions in York include the impressive York Minster, Clifford's Tower, The Shambles, Castle Museum, JORVIK Viking Centre, Yorkshire Museum and Museum Gardens. Just outside the city walls you will find the National Railway Museum which is the largest collection of railway locomotives in the world and includes the world's fastest steam locomotive LNER 4468 Mallard and the famous 4472 Flying Scotsman in its collection.
York has many gift shops, pubs, eating places and small independent boutique shops that you can browse looking for that unique purchase. The city is noted for its liability to flooding and you can choose to have a drink in the King's Arms, a pub that is often flooded, situated on the banks of the River Ouse.
