Dumfries is a town in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland, close to the Solway Firth. It makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding attractions which can easily be got to by car or in most cases also by public transport.
Some of the nearby attractions include the Solway Coast, Sweetheart Abbery, Criffel hill, Threave Castle, Caerlaverock Castle and Drumlanrig Castle. The town of Lockerbie which was devastated by the incident involving Pan AM Flight 103 is a nearby town which can be visited to learn about what took place on that day in December 1988.
Walkers and Ramblers will love the surrounding area to Dumfries and many bed and breakfasts cater for such guests. Special 'lunch' packs can be put together by many of the bed and breakfasts which means you don't have to bring your own food from home to take out with you when walking. Of course you will also get a good breakfasts as part of your stay which will get you ready for a day out and about.
Dumfries was the home town of the famous poet Robert Burns for a few years, he lived there from 1791 until his death in 1796. He is now buried in St. Michael’s Churchyard in the Burns Mausoleum. |
